What is practical philosophy & Logic-based consultations?

"We are often not disturbed by events, but our perception of those events" - Epictetus

Practical philosophy is a division of philosophy that helps people with everyday life problems.  By honing critical thinking skills, encouraging self-reflection, logically deconstructing an issue, and looking at the language we use, sessions can help equip us with the tools to approach each day with a little more clarity and purpose. In essence, practical philosophy attempts to act as a wise and practical companion, aiding in the resolution of problems, and contributing to more thoughtful and resilient approaches. For example, King Alexander had Aristotle, who do you have?

Logic-based consultations (a method used by the practical philosopher at Reasoned Life) works with clients to analyse their thought processes (how they form their conclusions and beliefs about something), recognise issues in reasoning that may not be working in their best interest, and guides them in developing more rational and constructive ways of thinking about the situation. Approaching a problem from a different perspective aims to improve our well-being as it shifts our thinking about the issue from self-defeating ways. If we believe that we 'can't' work through something, or there is no other way to look at a situation, it can hinder our ability to develop solutions and feel better. The goal is to promote clarity, self-awareness, and effective problem-solving by applying principles of logic to the individual's subjective experience.

What does a session look like?

"Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose a response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom" - V. Frankl

  • We have a short 15-minute phone consultation to discuss what your needs are, and how I may be able to help you. There is no charge for this consultation, and no obligation to book a full session. I work with clients personal challenges that are considered not distressing.

  • During a full session (in-person, phone, or video) we talk in-depth about your current concern. This provides you an open non-judgmental space for discussion and exploration.

  • We deconstruct and analyse your concern using logic and philosophy. We aim to challenge your thinking that may be not be working in your best interest. A new logic and philosophy can help simplify and enhance your life through valuable perspectives, new principles for navigating challenges, and insight into understanding oneself. I do not go into past trauma or provide a mental health diagnosis.

  • We aim to identify goals and action steps that can help you in your daily life. You choose what is best for you.

  • Integrating the illustrative technique allows a visual representation of your challenge that resonates with you. It provides a tangible takeaway from our conversation to build on.
